Density testing is one of the most accessible field checks available to fuel operators, but it is also frequently misunderstood. A hydrometer provides an observed density reading for a specific sample at a specific temperature. That information can be valuable, provided it is collected correctly and interpreted within its limits.
What the instrument measures
A hydrometer floats according to the density of the liquid. The point at which the fuel surface intersects the scale gives the observed reading. For the FuelGuard diesel kit, the hydrometer range is 0.800–0.850.
The number alone is not the conclusion. The result must be linked to the fuel grade, sample source, temperature, instrument range and applicable specification or reference data.
Why temperature matters
Fuel expands and contracts as temperature changes. The same fuel can therefore produce different observed density readings at different temperatures. Record the sample temperature with the supplied thermometer and use the relevant correction guidance before comparing the result with a reference value.
Representative sampling comes first
A precise reading from a poor sample is still a poor result. Before testing:
- identify the tank, compartment, vehicle or delivery being assessed;
- use a clean and compatible sample container;
- avoid residue from a previous fuel or cleaning chemical;
- select a sampling point that represents the question being investigated; and
- label retained samples where a dispute or escalation may follow.
A repeatable field procedure
- Fill the clean 1,000 mL measuring cylinder with the representative diesel sample.
- Measure and record the fuel temperature.
- Lower the hydrometer gently and allow it to float freely without touching the cylinder wall.
- Wait for movement and bubbles to settle.
- Read the scale at the appropriate liquid level.
- Photograph the reading, temperature and sample identification.
- Apply the relevant correction guidance and record the interpreted result.
What an unusual reading may indicate
A result outside the expected range can justify a repeat sample, quarantine, supplier query or laboratory escalation. It may reflect an incorrect fuel grade, contamination, mixed product, sampling error, temperature interpretation or another condition requiring investigation.
What a hydrometer cannot prove
A field density reading does not by itself prove adulteration, identify a contaminant or certify formal specification compliance. Those conclusions require the appropriate laboratory methods, representative retained samples and a defensible chain of custody.
Operational rule: use the hydrometer to identify an observation that needs a decision—not to make a laboratory claim the instrument cannot support.
Build the evidence around the reading
Retain the operator, date, time, location, fuel source, sample point, temperature, hydrometer reading, photographs and any repeat result. This turns a number into a traceable event record.
